‘Restart a heart’ – a resounding success.

19th October 2018

The ‘Restart a Heart’ day this week, was a resounding success as all Yrs 7-10 and Yrs 12 and 13 refreshed their knowledge and skills on how to administer CPR. It seems as though techniques change over time, so I was also given a refresher course by the NHS paramedics and volunteers. As one Yr 7 said ‘ It’s harder than you think – I’m puffed!’. It is indeed a significant commitment to give life saving CPR, a staggering 10,000 people in the UK require CPR each year and at the moment survival rates are as low as 1 in 10- many people simply don’t know what to do. In Australia the Restart a Heart campaign has improved survival to 1 in 4, so we feel proud that we have done our bit, to support the wider community this week. Our thanks to all those who took part.

As the pressure increases for Yr 11 and 13, there has been a significant increase in the number of students attending our lunchtime revision sessions. Sadly, a few Yr 11 students seem to find moving between lessons a little challenging and had racked up  a hefty number of ‘late’ minutes collectively. So this week saw  a new initiative – ‘Mrs Polley’s lunchtime pay back’  sessions. Those students with the highest number of ‘late minutes’ are now paying that time back, by attending an additional revision session. Interestingly, the 4 students who were with me this week, not only learnt a good deal but more importantly admitted that being late was something they didn’t intend to repeat.

Finally, whole school assembly this morning, led by Mr Ashcroft, launched our new Student Leadership programme. For the last few years we have been keen to improve and expand the leadership opportunities for students. Mr Ashcroft explained the first wave of leadership posts, in the guise of Head Boy and Girl and Deputies. Once in post these students will form 3 student bodies looking at strategic ways to support and improve our school. Applications, in writing, are welcomed from Yrs 10-13 by Thursday 25th November at 4pm.
