Consistency, consistency, consistency

8th November 2019

This week we have been focusing on our relentless routines, because even in a smaller school, it is essential that the staff and students are consistent in everything they do.

Consistency is critical to creating space for effective learning environments. Students are able to participate in learning more effectively when they have a clear understanding of classroom procedures and their importance. If students can name the expectations and receive consistent responses to their behavior they are in better control of their actions. Classroom expectations are important to academic achievement—consistent learning environments allow students to really thrive academically by providing time and space to focus on the academic material.

In our school we focus on the use of ‘non-negotiables’ for the teaching staff. These are :

  • The Learning Objective will be displayed on the board every lesson
  • There will be a Kagan seating plan for every class – using student characteristics, data and targets
  • I will ‘Meet and Greet’ at the start of every lesson there will be an activity for them to get on with given out or displayed on the board
  • I will admit students into the classroom in a quiet orderly manner
  • I will use the 5 minute lesson plan based on the curriculum maps for my subject
  • I will call the register every lesson
  • I will use Pivotal and the behaviour C system consistently
  • I will be active and vigilant whilst undertaking all my duties. I will always be on time and stay for the full duration of my duty
  • I will follow the ‘no see, no hear’ mobile phone policy in all areas of the school

Modeling gives students clear examples when they have to make a choice about what is appropriate.

Teachers lead the learning so they must lead the classroom environment in conjunction with targeted reinforcements to maintain a positive culture. Their guidance and consistent practice with meeting classroom expectations is a key part of behavior management. When teachers take the time to thoroughly instruct and model the expectations, students can and will follow.

For students we have clear classroom expectations:

  • Arrive on time with the appropriate equipment ready for work each lesson
  • Wear your school uniform correctly
  • Do as you are told by staff, first time, every time
  •  Listen carefully when someone is talking
  • Always try your best without disturbing others
  • Always do your homework properly and hand it in on time

These may seem very simple and they are. However, as we move towards Mocks, we will be having a real focus on doing the basics well, all the time, every time.
