Initially created by the Yorkshire Ridings Society in 1975, Yorkshire Day is a celebration of the county and its rich, interesting history. As a Yorkshire-based community, we, of course, will all be enjoying the day and thought we’d share some facts about our county that you might not already be aware of.
- If Yorkshire was a country, it would have come 12th in the 2012 Olympic games, having scooped 7 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.
- Famous people from Yorkshire include Guy Fawkes, the Brontë sisters, Dick Turpin, Jess Ennis and Nicola Adams.
- Hardraw Force, near Hawes, is England’s largest single-drop waterfall.
- Yorkshire is the largest county in the UK.
- Leeds, York, and Scarborough are among the top ten most-visited English towns by UK residents.
- Yorkshire is home to the oldest football association in the world.
- The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is the longest steam-operated railway in the UK
- Yorkshire puddings were first invented in 1737.
- The Roman empire was briefly governed from York.
- Yorkshire contains a third of the total area of National Parks in England
