British Science Week #SmashingStereotypes

14th March 2022

This week is British Science Week! To celebrate, we wanted to highlight the organisation’s ‘#SmashingStereotypes’ campaign, in which they are showcasing diverse teams in STEM industries. Whilst we often have a particular expectation of who a person working in a STEM industry might be, anyone can get involved. The British Science Week website has a great section with different industry professionals from all sorts of backgrounds with their experiences, what they do and how they got started!

Charlotte Grinyer, one of the featured professionals, says ‘I believe the biggest misconception about engineering as a career is that there’s only one route to get into it. Actually, there are many diverse ways to get into the industry, whether through a degree, an apprenticeship, or a more unconventional route. Moving into engineering from any science-based degree is straightforward thanks to the transferable skills, however, we sometimes forget that engineering is all about thinking outside the box. So, degrees such as psychology or design are just as impactful!’.
