We finally unveil “exciting” new Sixth Form offer

10th November 2017

Last night we hosted a terrific event to launch our new Business and Innovation centre for September 2018. Speaking to a packed hall, students, parents and local business colleagues heard from Mr Barnett, Richard Sanderson & David Poole from the Lower Wensleydale Business Network,  about how we have created a bespoke offer for young people aimed at developing entrepreneurs. There is no doubt that the career landscape has changed significantly in recent years, as businesses become more competitive and rely heavily on effective marketing and communication. It is fact that many academic degree courses do not prepare young adults for the business world, indeed many young people are choosing not to go to university. There is also a distinct lack of tailored business and entrepreneurial opportunities for post-16 students. For some students an academic A level route, at post-16 is the right choice and there are excellent providers in our area. For some a more vocational route, through college is more appropriate and again this area is well served for these types of course. However there are a growing number of students who simply want to learn about business and have the opportunity to practice their academic theory in a workplace environment. The courses we are offering from September will enable young people at 18 to go to university if they wish, all courses have UCAS points; apply for a higher level apprenticeship, which is becoming more popular with employers: or go straight into a business environment. We are excited by our new direction. If you want to apply or know more please contact Mr Barnett.

On Sunday I will be attending the Remembrance Service in Leyburn, however unlike last year I will be joined by one of our students , Aiden and his Dad – Mr Mackintosh, who will be laying the wreath on behalf of the students and staff. Mr Mackintosh is ex-Army and one of our Maths teachers. We have invested in the ‘Troops to teachers’ programme very effectively and currently have 2 more ex service personnel training with us. Next week we welcome Mr Squires and Mrs Bradley, as new teachers to our school both in DT.
