Preparing for the next academic year

6th August 2021

We’re just a few weeks into a long-anticipated summer, which means it may seem pre-emptive to begin discussing pupils’ returns in September. The next big step for many children, however, is just around the corner. Of course, some moves up are bigger leaps than others, but there’s always an incredible amount of excitement associated with moving into the next academic year, and it can even be a little bit daunting. Often there’s new teachers, new responsibilities, and sometimes even new students and/or subjects. If you are a bit nervous, though, we thought we’d share some of our insights and reassurances ready for next month’s welcome back into school.

Firstly, remember that change and progression are good! Moving up means moving forward and there’s loads of exciting things that come with new school years. Of course, for new GCSE and A Level pupils, it means new chosen subjects which is especially fun, but this applies to all year groups. As you get older, you get more responsibility, and you might even find you get the chance to make more friends. It can be really satisfying to view the new academic year as an opportunity for a fresh start, so make the most of it!

Secondly, there are some tips and advice that can facilitate a smooth transition. Using the time you have now to make sure you’re ready for September can take some of the anxiety away. As such, making sure your uniform, stationery and any summer homework is all prepared can make you feel extra equipped to join your new year group. It can also help to come prepared with an idea of the strengths you’ve developed so far, and the things you’d like to work on over the next year. This way, you’re ready to make the most of your time.

Most importantly, however, remember to get loads of rest over summer, and come back ready to have fun! The summer holidays are an important chance for you to take time for yourself and to spend time with friends, so make sure to take advantage of your well-deserved break. In September, you can come back fresh and well-rested, ready for another great year.
